What is UCMAS?

UCMAS is a child development program based on Visual Arithmetic and Abacus that boosts brainpower in children aged 5-13 years. Founded in 1993 in Malaysia by Dr. Dinnoh Wong in just 24 yeas UCMAS is present in 78 countries including India, Canada, US, UK, China & Australia and has helped more than 2 million children around the world "Discover the genius within".

Along with strengthening math skills, the UCMAS approach promotes whole brain development and establishes foundational building blocks like memory, concentration, spead & accuracy, creativity and problem solving leading to improvement in overall performance. Plus our exciting classes and energetic instructors ensure that our students have fun as they learn.

What is Abacus?

Abacus is an ancient calculating device, also known to be the first computer. In terms of structure, it has a frame with beads which are used in counting. There are hundreds of styles of Abacus available across the globe. Infact there are museums which showcases the huge variety of Abacus developed over a period of time.

The particular type of Abacus that we use in UCMAS is called Sorobon. The reason why we use this is it works on Base - 10 System, which is similar to the concept we use in our day to day conventional Mathematics Education.

How Does UCMAS Abacus Program Works?

The human brain is divided into the left hemisphere which is the logical side and the right hemisphere which is the abstract side. While the traditional education system is more focused on developing the left or logical side, the UCMAS programme stimulates both sides of the brain. Our students are trained to perform arithmetic operations on the Abacus by driving the beads of the Abacus with both their hands .The use of both the hands is a key aspect; the action of the right hand develops the calculating and logical thinking function of the left brain, and the action of the left hand develops the imaginary and creative function of the right brain.

Besides, by using the Abacus, students rethink arithmetic by thinking in pictures, with numbers being represented as beads on the Abacus as opposed to numerals. Once students become adept at performing "mental aerobics" on the Abacus, they are further trained to mentally visualize the Abacus and solve the problems in their mind, without the support of a physical Abacus. When calculating mentally the students engage both the sides of the brain simultaneously, they visualize the Abacus with their right brain and do the logical calculations with their left brain solving the questions much more quickly than before .By the end of the programme the brain has been developed to be more efficient leading to improved concentration, enhanced memory, creativity, problem solving capability, faster calculation speed and greater efficiency & accuracy.

How is the UCMAS Abacus Program Structured?

UCMAS is a about 32 months long program which is divided into 8 Modules or about 4 months each. Since the children are school going children, they can primarily devote times either in weekends or in evening on week days.

A child devotes 2 hours /once a week with us.

In the initial period, the child is apprised of concepts of Abacus. Gradually, with the passing of every module, the child starts performing basic calculations mentally. By the end of program, the child solves large arithmetic questions mentally and does not need physical abacus any more.
